What is Embroidery?
Embroidery, like every other art form, needs to be understood to be fully appreciated and enjoyed. The urge to "paint" with needle and thread is an old one. Not long after people first clothed themselves, they began to search for ways to embellish their garments. One of the earliest examples is a braided hairnet discovered in a 3000 year old Danish grave. Native Americans used local and exotic materials and bone needles to create intricate designs for religious and personal expression. Colonial women used needlework for social connections, decoration and keepsakes. Churches used decorative arts, including embroidery, to tell about Bible stories and the life events of saints, hoping no doubt for a lesson learned. Contemporary historical events and subjects were often captured in stitches instead of pigment and brushes. One of the earliest masterpieces is the Bayeux Tapestry (11th c.), recording the events around the Battle of Hastings, telling how William the Conqueror conquered England. The tapestry is actually embroidery since the scenes are laid on a ground cloth instead of woven in during creation. In aristocratic circles, servants were often hired because of their skills with a needle. Master designers were also hired for layout and design.
Needlework has been represented in and throughout history in one form or other. Once the exclusive property of the rich and powerful, modern computerized operations have put fine embroidery within the reach of everyone. Embroidery is, and continues to be, a rich, impressive and innovative form of personal expression. Those who sew, make history.

-

We deliver all orders as quickly as possible. In stock items can generally be embroidered and delivered within 2 - 3 weeks. Orders requiring custom digitizing or custom coloring and items which must be ordered from our suppliers may take slightly longer.
-
How will my order be shipped?
To keep shipping costs down, Vanity Threads normally ships via Priority Mail or First Class Mail through the U.S. Post Office. Express shipping is available for an extra charge. Contact us for this option.
-
Where can my chosen design be embroidered on a garment?
Designs can be embroidered many places on a garment – front, back, sleeves, pant legs, etc. Obviously, design size and shape influences placement. Contact us if you want a design sewn in an unusual place. We will work with you to see what is possible.
-
Can the direction of the design I choose be changed?
Yes, we can change the direction and/or rotation of any design. Tell us what you want and we will work with you to accomplish your ideal design.
-
Can Vanity Threads embroider a design from a picture of my dog, cat, horse, etc.?
No, drawings and other artwork must be digitized before they can be sewn out as embroidery.
-
Can Vanity Threads recolor the design to make it look more like my dog, cat, horse, etc.?
Yes, we can custom color designs for an extra charge. (Please note that only the colors in the design and not the design itself will be altered.) The cost of custom coloring typically ranges from $10 - $60 depending on the complexity of the changes required.
-
Can I put a very large (jacket back sized) design on a T-shirt, grooming smock or other item made out of a light fabric?
The answer depends on the stitch count of the large design chosen. Light fabrics will not support large high stitch count designs, but large light stitch designs will do well on light fabrics. For example, Rough Collie design DG0375 is a large design which works well on light fabrics because of its light stitch count.
-
Where is embroidery possible on cap?
Designs measuring a maximum of 2 ¼” high x approximately 4” wide can be embroidered on the front of caps. Embroidery can also be added to the side(s) and back of caps.
-
What is Photo Stitch?
The photo-stitch technique is more reminiscent of pencil or crayon sketches, rather than embroidery. Multi-colored photo-stitch designs give an almost Impressionist effect, which is why this technique is often used when digitizing works of art. It uses very densely placed stitches, often overlaping each other.
-
What if I want to order something else with the same design in the future? Will Vanity Threads be able to duplicate the design I choose on future purchases?

-
How do I care for my embroidered garment or accessory?
Embroidery is quite resilient and with a little special care will last for a long time. Turn your garment inside out for washing. Do not wash embroidered garments with other garments with zippers or open hooks (such as bra hooks) that can catch on your threads and snag the design. Use cold or warm water and a neutral detergent. DO NOT use chlorine bleach or iron directly on embroidery. Complete washing instructions are included with each order.
-
Will you sew 1 or more quilt squares for me?
Yes, requests for designs sewn on fabric squares have been unexpectedly strong. Many quilters who do not have embroidery machines want to include one or more embroidered squares in their quilts and we are happy to help them achieve their creative vision. Quilt squares start at $30 (for up to 10,000 stitches of embroidery) and will be sewn on fabric you provide. Keep in mind that relatively light weight cotton fabrics most frequently used in quilting will not support high stitch count designs. Contact us to discuss your ideas and we will work with you to achieve a quilt square that will give your project that special touch.
